MTV’s Iconic 30th Anniversary

Remember when music videos debuted back in 1984 on a new cable network called MTV?

We remember – and we recently reflected upon the level of risk taken by the executives who conceived an entire television network dedicated to the visual presentation of something that is aural by nature.

To see how that risk paid off, tune in this Sunday at 9pm for the 30th Anniversary edition of the MTV Video Music Awards show.

In similar fashion, Cord Management is celebrating its 10th Anniversary of helping corporate America take calculated risks. This month we’ve begun planning for the 10th annual One Night Only concert experience that takes place in Chicago each May when the National Restaurant Show occurs.

It was ten years ago this month that an executive from Procter & Gamble’s Professional division approached us with the idea of hosting a private concert just a few miles from the convention center where the restaurant industry’s largest annual sales conference convenes.

That year, Hootie & the Blowfish performed for about 700 guests at the Park West, a 70’s era music venue located in the city’s north-side Lincoln Park neighborhood.

This year, Sheryl Crow performed for more than 1,000 at the House of Blues along Chicago’s glamorous riverfront.

Was it a risk for P&G Professional to step outside the convention center “box” and create a music-centric sales platform? Certainly.

Was it successful? Without a doubt.

Is it still going strong? You bet.

We’ve also led DOT Foods, World Pet Association, Kyle Petty’s Victory Junction and many others into the exciting and rewarding world of corporate concerts. To learn how popular music can increase your bottom line, call Cord Management at 615-866-5003.

And to rekindle memories from 30 years ago, below is a list of the first ten songs played on MTV.
